Lone Star Executive Airport Grows With Montgomery County

When most discuss transportation issues in Montgomery County, they’re usually referring to roadways. However, Lone Star Executive Airport plays a significant role in transportation and is only growing to meet expanding needs.

The airport, owned and operated by Montgomery County, supports nearly 300 jobs, has upwards of 20,000 visitors each year and makes a $33 million impact on the local economy annually. “As the population grows, so does aviation,” said Scott Smith, Director of Lone Star.

Originally built to serve the Navy in World War II, the airport became open to civilian use in 1946. As a General Aviation airport, today Lone Star provides an airport for business and corporate aviation as well as local pilots and plane owners.

Out of response to the growth of the north side of Houston and Montgomery County, the county has made more land available for development. One such development is Galaxy FBO, the newest fixed-base operator, located on the east side of the airport. Joining the airport’s other fixed based operators, Wingjet Center and General Aviation Services, Galaxy FBO was completed in September 2013. Owned by Black Forest Aviation, the facility includes a 26,000 square-foot terminal building and two 40,000 square-foot terminals. The three-story building houses office space for pilots, rest areas for crews, and a staff to assist with a variety of needs such as hotel and rental reservations. In addition, Black Walnut Cafe is located on the third floor, with an outdoor patio overlooking the runway.

Along with business aviation, Lone Star is home to the 1st Battalion - 158th Aviation Regiment, one of only two Army Reserve units in the continental United States to fly the Apache helicopter. Members are involved in the maintenance of their equipment and flight training. The unit supports 100 jobs.

PHI Air Medical a medical evacuation company, is also based out of Lone Star. Each month they complete an average of 50 missions, transporting critical patients to medical care. Each flight has an RN and paramedic on board, along with the pilot. They are the nearest medevac available for Montgomery County residents.

The county has been active in preparing the airport for increased traffic. The airport has two runways; one is 5,000 feet long, while the other was just lengthened to 7,501 feet. The project was completed in February of this year. With the expansion, the runway is now less than 100 feet from the length of Hobby Airport’s.

The next project on the list is the addition of a U.S. Customs and Border Protection facility. This will allow private and business aviation to clear customs. “It’s significant because of the amount of business in Houston to Mexico and Central America,” said Smith. He sees this addition as a catalyst for more development. “Once you have customs, that opens up more ability to serve the demand,” he said.

With the increase in traffic to the airport and on airport grounds, Montgomery County has plans to add additional roadways with funds from the May bond election. Contingent upon the passing of the bond, plans include connecting the League Line Road extension into the airport and adding a roadway around the airport’s internal perimeter. “That’s primarily for safety,” said Smith, noting that the perimeter road would eliminate internal traffic from crossing runways.

In addition, the development of Deison Technology Park will create a pool of business flyers adjacent to the airport. The park is a planned technology business community of 248-acres designed to accommodate technology businesses. The Conroe Industrial Development Corporation and the Greater Conroe  Economic Development Council are working to attract and retain businesses for the site.
