It’s here, the start of the Holiday’s, the first toast good-bye to 2015 and welcome 2016, IT"S THANKSGIVING WEEK!!!!! So I thought I would start us out with a few random thoughts about the holiday….
Thanksgiving Day Movies/Shows:
A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving
Planes, Trains and Automobiles
An Old Fashioned Thanksgiving
"Thanksgiving dinners take eighteen hours to prepare. They are consumed in twelve minutes. Half-times take twelve minutes. This is not coincidence." -Erma Bombeck
"If you want to turn your life around, try thankfulness. It will change your life mightily." -Gerald Good
"As we express our gratitude, we must never forget that the highest appreciation is not to utter words, but to live by them." -John Fitzgerald Kennedy
"Thanksgiving Day comes, by statute, once a year; to the honest man it comes as frequently as the heart of gratitude will allow." -Edward Sandford Martin
"The Pilgrims made seven times more graves than huts. No Americans have been more impoverished than these who, nevertheless, set aside a day of thanksgiving." -H.U. Westermayer
And put them together for Movie Quotes:
"Now if you'll excuse me, I'm going to go baste the turkey and hide the kitchen knives." House of Yes
A thought about Thanksgiving Day: "Once, there was this day. . . this one day when. . . everyone realized they needed each other." Pieces of April
But Thanksgiving is more than eating, Chuck. You heard what Linus was saying out there. Those early Pilgrims were thankful for what had happened to them, and we should be thankful, too. We should just be thankful for being together. I think that's what they mean by 'Thanksgiving,' Charlie Brown. – A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving
Thanksgiving Songs… why yes there are some (or we will call these Thankful Songs.. they should work for this application)
A Thanksgiving Song by Mary Chapin Carpenter in 2008
Kind and Generous from 1998 by Natalie Merchant
How ‘bout What a Wonderful World Louis Armstrong from 1968
Adam Sandler in 1993 gave us The Thanksgiving Song
Then there is the thankful song of Dido in 2000 Thank You.
America is not the only country the celebrates thankfulness… other around the world include:
Canada – 2nd Monday in October
Grenada – October 25th
Liberia – 1st Thursday of November
The Netherlands – 4th Thursday in November like us
Australia – Last Wednesday in of November
Saint Lucia – 1st Monday in October
United Kingdom – held on or near the 1st Sunday of the harvest moon that occurs closest to the autumn equinox. (They had to make it complicated.)
These countries have similar holidays: Germany, Japan
Famous Thanksgiving Dishes:
Green Bean Casserole, Brussels Sprouts, Creamed Corn Cornbread, Sweet Potatoes, Cranberry Sauce, Mashed Potatoes, Broccoli and Cheese Casserole, All types of dressing and then the stars of our show... Turkey and Honey Cured Hams.
And finally a warning of Thanksgiving Dinner Mistakes:
Give your Turkey enough time to thaw – four pounds per day in the refrigerator. So yes it could take that 16 lb turkey 4 days to completely thaw!!!
The magazines covers look like they do it.. but remember they are only photographing the table - The middle of the turkey takes the longest to cook, so stuffing the turkey with stuffing could be a health hazard. Cook the stuffing separately – it will be much better!
Waiting to the last minute to cook those last few dishes – which relates to the problem of too much food. Make a plan and stick to the plan.
Use a roasting rack, don’t overcooking the Turkey and please let it rest 20 minutes before carving.
Try not to opening the oven door too much while the Turkey is cooking – that will cause it not to cook correctly.
Serving too much food before diner is on the table.
Leaving the food sitting out to long before or after the meal, prepared food should stay out at room temperature for not longer than 2 hours before bacterial begins to become an issue.
However, you celebrate – do it with a happy heart, a thankful heart – and remember those around you that might not have having the best of years… and share a little of your joy with them.
Happy Thanksgiving, from my heart to yours!
