Do You Know Any Real Estate Agents

Raise your hand if you know a Real Estate agent! Do you know two? Five or more? Me too. Of course, I do, but I knew more than five before becoming one, and the month I became a Licensed Agent – three of my friends decided to do so as well ...yep! same month.

Why not? It’s a great job! Set your own hours, work when you want to – where you want to – be your own boss. Drive fancy cars and tour beautiful homes. It is living the dream.

Everyone has different reasons for getting into Real Estate and normally during one of those ‘About me’ introductions you will hear the "I love this area, I love helping people, I love to serve." Those are all good reasons and I can also say “Yes” to all of the above. But why did I get into Real Estate? I didn’t dream about it for year or want to do it in college. I do NOT like watching HGTV – I make my husband turn it off if I am in the room.

I got into Real Estate because someone I respected told me they thought I would make a great agent. I was hoping for good and dived in feet first. To be truthful, I think I had my mouth open, because I felt like I was drinking from a firehose. Those first few months, my head was spinning. I had no idea there was so much to learn. I wanted to go show houses and look at the décor.

Fast forward – it was the worst time to jump in and it was slow going with fast learning. I survived the Real Estate slump and made it! I have seen more friends jump in and others jump out. See, I learned it’s not a "do it part-time 'til you build a client list” job. It’s not make a million your first year. It is hard work and persistence and, well, you do not just tell people you love it – you must love it.

I was lucky – I came from newspapers, marketing and IT – I knew that if the phone rang, I had to answer it.

  • I graduated from Sam Houston State with a Photography Degree and because I shot weddings and parties, I understood that you had to be there when the event and client needed you – not on your time schedule.

  • I had been a Project Manager and understood that it takes a talented specialized team (of which you have no control) all working together, dissolving problems and riding out delays without giving up.

  • I had served on a Band Booster Club Board and knew that sometimes you had to teach, work with limited resources and be ethical but legally creative to achieve some goals.

  • I had been a Plant Director and had experience looking at floor plans, building contracts, negotiating and rating then hiring contractors.

  • In college I worked Retail in a supervisory role, I KNEW customer service.

  • I worked in the Church Prayer Room. There is prayer in real estate, or at least my real estate.

I had skills I never knew belonged in the real estate bag.

After 8 years, being a 6 time Five Star Professional Award winner and a Top Producer at my firm, the unexpected happened on a long, rainy day. My Mom turned to me and asked, “How long are you going to keep doing this? Is it what you expected it to be?”

Nope. It is not anything like I expected – but hopefully I am in it a long time. I love it!!

I can’t tell you if I am good or great as it was projected, See I am just not that way, I cannot rate myself. But I can tell you it makes me want to get up and out in the morning.

See I DO love this area, I DO love helping , I DO love to serve. I really do. I love it when it works out perfectly and we appraise high and buy lower and close early – that is a win! But I really love it when we get the deal, inspections are rough, there is a snag in title and we close a day or two late, but earlier than we thought. That’s a WIN!

I can even stand the times that we don’t get the deal, or it falls through – because I know at night, when I close my eyes I gave my all. I might not have been the best, but I did my best and I will be better next time.

So, the next time you are asked if you know a Real Estate agent, I hope you'll think of me whether you raised your hand at one or two or five. I’m not giving it up Mom – it’s my life!

If you need my help give me a call – I’ll Get You HOME!
