Boom Time Again Happy New Year Safetly PLEASE

This is a somewhat a reprint of my blog from this summer.. but it still holds true during this winter season of fireworks. Special Shout out to my friends in the Willis Band Boosters.. out there making it happen for the kids of the WIllis Band Program.. and thank you to Boomtown Fireworks for supporting the Band and the Community.

During my time serving at the Fireworks Warehouse (off Hwy 75 in Willis); I learned and became very familiar with the many types of fireworks.   I am sad to report there were times that I became so comfortable with them that I let my guard down.  On one occasion I was a bit careless.  Fortunately no one was hurt, nor property damaged during my lapse in care; but I realized that it could have had a different outcome.  It could always have a different outcome when dealing with gunpowder and fire… duh.  It happens so quickly – you're with friends and family, having a good time and it only takes a second, a mistake, a moment  -  it could turn serious.

Of course, the Montgomery County Fire Marshal strongly recommends that we leave the Fireworks to the professionals, and that you should ONLY celebrate with fireworks if it is legal in your area.  Remember to be mindful of the laws and deed restrictions in your area.   With that being said; if you decide to purchase fireworks here are a few safety tips from my years in the trenches. (I also agree, anytime you can, it’s best to leave the job to a professional… remember it takes more than a hat to be a pirate.)

  • Alcohol and Fireworks never mix .

  • Always ignite Fireworks outdoors; away from homes, buildings and vehicles

  • Always buy from fireworks from licensed and authorizes sellers. NEVER try to create or invent your own pop, snap or bang.

  • Always have water on hand in case of a fire and shoot them from a flat surface.

  • Be sure that other people are out of range before lighting any fireworks.

  • Be careful to not light more than one firework at a time.

  • Beware of fireworks that do not fully discharge and NEVER re-light a firework that didn’t fully function.

  • Being funny and throwing fireworks at others is not cool and could cause burns or injury if contact is made or as the person tries to retreat.

  • Carrying Fireworks in your pocket or shooting them off in metal or glass containers may cause serious injuries.

  • Cautionary Labels are there for a reason - Always read and FOLLOW the label warnings and instructions.

  • Dispose of spent fireworks properly – by wetting them down and placing in a metal trash can way from buildings or combustible materials until the next day.

  • Finally, be considerate of your neighbors and pets.  Everyone understand that it is a time to celebrate – but at some point it’s time to put the fireworks away for another day.  Regarding pets, they have keen senses that make fireworks more intense for them, i.e. the noise or smoke.  Firework noise is not like thunder. Thunder comes with warning signs (changes in the air pressure  along with the smell of rain)  allowing your pets to anticipate the forthcoming noise – fireworks do not.

The Boomtown Fireworks Warehouse is South of Willis on Hwy 75 - check them out on Facebook

This location has been supporting the Willis Bands  for more years than I can recall. The kids work the warehouse and the money goes directly to the kids.  And there you can purchase happiness, or a few seconds of it for I think $3.99.  They are open today and until January 1, 2016 1:00 AM.

If you would like to support a local organization and shop for your fireworks indoors - I can't think of a better place to shop - again, always be safe with fireworks.  Tell the Band I said hello!!  It's won't get you a discount, but it could get you a story or two about those days.
